Employee Engagement through a marketing lens
In today’s competitive job market, your employees are one LinkedIn shiny-object away from being lured out the door. Retention is always a hot-button issue – especially for our clients in healthcare and hospitality.
So what can you do?
Here are our top tips for keeping your employees engaged:
- Smaller Rewards, More Often. You’d be amazed what a coffee, gas, or Amazon.com card can do to make someone’s day. Take it up a notch with branded company swag, and bonus, your employees become walking ads for your company.
- Make Motivation Fun. Sure, you could deliver your quarterly sales goals in a memo. Or, you could be like our client, Five Star Senior Living, and send a superhero mask, company swag, and a book to help them discover their Ordinary Superpowers.
- Cross-train and educate. Encourage employees to cross-train and learn different job functions at your organization. This can help alleviate boredom and light a fire under employees with a specific interest or passion. Set annual goals with individual employees, then work together to find courses, conferences, and trainings to achieve them.
“Lack of growth opportunities is one of the key reasons for employee turnover, and 87% of millennials say professional development is important in a job.” -Forbes.com
Most importantly, make sure every employee knows how important their contribution is, feels they have a purpose, knows your mission and feels a part of it.
It’s more than good business. It’s science. Our brains are designed to want to experiment, explore, and learn. It’s called our “Seeking” system, and when we’re allowed to do these activities, our brains release Dopamine – and we feel happy. (Of course, beer and pizza help, too.) You can read more about the science behind motivation here.
Today, the HR department is a marketing department, too. You have to get creative if you want to retain top talent. The good news is, you don’t have to go it alone. We’re happy to talk shop over a few slices of Spa anytime.
